چکیده

We introduce and study a network resource management problem that is a special case of nonmetric k-median, naturally arising in cross platform scheduling and cloud computing. In the continuous d-dimensional container selection problem, we are given a set C ⊂ R of input points, for some d ≥ 2, and a budget k. An input point p can be assigned to a “container point” c only if c dominates p in every dimension. The assignment cost is then equal to the `1-norm of the container point. The goal is to find k container points in R, such that the total assignment cost for all input points is minimized. The discrete variant of the problem has one key distinction, namely, the container points must be chosen from a given set F of points. For the continuous version, we obtain a polynomial time approximation scheme for any fixed dimension d ≥ 2. On the negative side, we show that the problem is NP-hard for any d ≥ 3. We further show that the discrete version is significantly harder, as it is NP-hard to approximate without violating the budget k in any dimension d ≥ 3. Thus, we focus on obtaining bi-approximation algorithms. For d = 2, the bi-approximation guarantee is (1 + , 3), i.e., for any > 0, our scheme outputs a solution of size 3k and cost at most (1 + ) times the optimum. For fixed d > 2, we present a (1 + , O( 1 log k)) bi-approximation algorithm. 1998 ACM Subject Classification F.2.2 Nonnumerical Algorithms and Problems

Scheduling Single-Load and Multi-Load AGVs in Container Terminals

In this paper, three solutions for scheduling problem of the Single-Load and Multi-Load Automated Guided Vehicles (AGVs) in Container Terminals are proposed. The problem is formulated as Constraint Satisfaction and Optimization. When capacity of the vehicles is one container, the problem is a minimum cost flow model. This model is solved by the highest performance Algorithm, i.e. Network Simple...

Modeling the Container Selection for Freight Transportation: Case Study of Iran

Significant advantages of intermodal and containerized transport have increased the global interest to this mode of transportation. This growing interest is reflected in the annual volume of container cargo growth. However, the container transport inside Iran does not have a proper place. Comparing the count of containers entering and leaving ports with the statistics obtained from railway and ...

Optimizing the Static and Dynamic Scheduling problem of Automated Guided Vehicles in Container Terminals

The Minimum Cost Flow (MCF) problem is a well-known problem in the area of network optimisation. To tackle this problem, Network Simplex Algorithm (NSA) is the fastest solution method. NSA has three extensions, namely Network Simplex plus Algorithm (NSA+), Dynamic Network Simplex Algorithm (DNSA) and Dynamic Network Simplex plus Algorithm (DNSA+). The objectives of the research reported in this...

Optimal Allocation of Ships to Quay Length in Container Ports

Due to the continuously increasing container trade, many terminals are presently operating at or close to capacity. An efficient terminal is one that facilitates the quick transshipment of containers to and from ships. In this sake, this paper addresses the ship assignments problem at a maritime container terminal, where ships are normally assigned to specific quay cranes until the work is fini...

Quay Cranes and Yard Trucks Scheduling Problem at Container Terminals

A bi-objective mathematical model is developed to simultaneously consider the quay crane and yard truck scheduling problems at container terminals. Main real-world assumptions, such as quay cranes with non-crossing constraints, quay cranes’ safety margins and precedence constraints are considered in this model. This integrated approach leads to better efficiency and productivity at container te...

Scheduling in Container Terminals using Network Simplex Algorithm

In static scheduling problem, where there is no change in situation, the challenge is that the large problems can be solved in a short time. In this paper, the Static Scheduling problem of Automated Guided Vehicles in container terminal is solved by the Network Simplex Algorithm (NSA). The algorithm is based on graph model and their performances are at least 100 times faster than traditional si...
